Teacher Professional Development: Bridging Classrooms Across Cultures

This fall, over 30 classes from China, India, Korea, Mexico, Peru and the USA have come together to create a rich and diverse learning environment, allowing their students to have meaningful intercultural dialogue. To ensure a smooth and impactful start to the semester, participating teachers have undergone Teacher Professional Development sessions where they were introduced to IVECA’s core principles, the virtual classroom’s diverse features, and the global teaching and learning structure. Teachers were also guided to the necessary tools and strategies to effectively engage their students in cross-cultural exchanges, and they shared their motivation for joining IVECA, educational missions, and areas of interest.

In particular, we were delighted to have new school partners, such as a school on the West Coast of the United States, in Oregon. The new participants embrace the IVECA program with enthusiasm, recognizing how seamlessly it aligns with their curricula and mission. Both IVECA and the school are committed to fostering global citizenship and intercultural awareness, emphasizing creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to empower students to address real-world challenges from diverse perspectives. The school teachers shared that their focus on place-based learning and local impact mirrors IVECA’s goal of connecting students to global issues while fostering responsibility within their communities.

Building on this shared vision of global citizenship and community engagement, the semester’s activities explore a wide range of topics, with a strong emphasis on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Key subjects include the influence of ancient civilizations on the modern globalized world, the power of storytelling, the challenges of climate change and air pollution across different nations, and the legal issues surrounding decision-making through artificial intelligence.

IVECA remains dedicated to its mission, working closely with teachers to create an environment where students can learn and connect with peers worldwide, exchange cultural insights, develop a global perspective, and contribute positively to both their local and international communities. One teacher from India expressed, "I’m very thrilled and very excited to be part of such a great initiative where of course [our teachers and students] are going to learn a lot, and there will be loads of cultural exchange! Let’s appreciate the fact that we are part of such a beautiful community."
