This year’s HLPF provides an important venue to expand global awareness of, and commitment to, Education for Global Citizenship (EGC), which is integral to SDG 4.7. As noted by Inga Rhonda King, President of ECOSOC, HLPF’s reviews “should reflect the integrated nature of the Goals as well as the interlinkages between them.”[1] EGC provides particularly effective pedagogic tools for inculcating integrative and holistic perspectives on the SDGs while cultivating empowered global citizens and healthy natural systems.
Global citizens identify with being a part of an interdependent world community, respect cultural diversity and human rights, and understand their perspectives and actions impact the values and practices of the world as well as local communities. Enriching conventional notions of identity which include nationality, religion, and ethnicity, global citizenship recognizes local cultures, practices, and knowledge systems and embraces intercultural dialogue in…
