This year’s HLPF provides an important venue to expand global awareness of, and commitment to, Education for Global Citizenship (EGC), which is integral to SDG 4.7. As noted by Inga Rhonda King, President of ECOSOC, HLPF’s reviews “should reflect the integrated nature of the Goals as well as the interlinkages between them.” EGC provides particularly effective pedagogic tools for inculcating integrative and holistic perspectives on the SDGs while cultivating empowered global citizens and healthy natural systems.
Global citizens identify with being a part of an interdependent world community, respect cultural diversity and human rights, and understand their perspectives and actions impact the values and practices of the world as well as local communities. Enriching conventional notions of identity which include nationality, religion, and ethnicity, global citizenship recognizes local cultures, practices, and knowledge systems and embraces intercultural dialogue in a manner that complements the dignity of all human beings and preserves biodiversity.
Education for Global Citizenship is an overarching concept that includes global citizenship education. As UNESCO (2013) explains, “Global citizenship education aims to empower learners to engage and assume active roles both locally and globally to face and resolve global challenges and ultimately to become proactive contributors to a more just, peaceful, tolerant, inclusive, secure and sustainable world.”
EGC fosters the implementation of SDG initiatives and the partnerships among CSO/NGOs and the public and private sectors to achieve the SDGs. EGC also offers a paradigm appropriate for formal, informal, and nonformal educational settings that must engage our interconnected world, where actions in one place create social and natural impacts around the world.
As the global community moves forward with its efforts to finance and implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the 2019 HLPF is an opportunity to highlight the significant role that Education for Global Citizenship must play in achieving a quality education for all students (SDG4) and advancing all of the Sustainable Development Goals. Invited speakers to this HLPF Side Event will highlight best practices, effective strategies for measuring EGC successes, and emerging opportunities to leverage EGC activities that advance the Global Goal.
The broader vision for this event is to promote SDG 4.7 and to ensure that Education for Global Citizenship is integrated into national education standards as an essential 21st Century literacy, with attention to culturally appropriate best practices. Speakers at this event will include NGO and academic experts, UN and member state specialists, and visionary leaders.
